The Trousseau
Traditionally every woman in Portugal would during adolescence, start to make and collect her own dowry: a textile treasure of tablecloths, bedspreads, doilies, rugs, etc. The film ‘De Uitzet‘ takes place in the houses of my family in Portugal, where my mother, my sister and my aunts talk about the highlights of their trousseaus as they take them out of their cupboards and unfold them. Some pieces in their collections go back three or four generations.
A life attitude of perseverance
Their personal stories create a poetic picture of the great dedication that women pay to their textiles and the meaning associated with it. Like the tablecloth, that took 25 years to make. It reveals not only the beauty of the work, but foremost a life attitude of perseverance, away from the hurries of daily life, just enjoying the pleasure of making, whatever time it takes.
