Elfriede
The medallion is an object that often carries special stories of farewell and connection in sight. The recent reports about the influx of refugees reminded me of the letter written by A. Winkler from Judenburg, Austria, in June 1949.

The letter of recommendation was given to her daughter Elfriede, age 9, when she traveled by train with other children to Portugal, to strengthen. Elfriede lived with my grandparents for 1.5 years and has become part of our family history. The 150-word letter has been compressed in its entirety by me in a minuscule handwriting into a complex vertebral vignette, fitting exactly within the space for the image of the medallion, 3 x 2 cm. In the middle the initial letters ‘Elfri’ can just be read. The drawing is mounted in a silver medallion, with a twisted yellow gold wire.
